Infielder Andrew Velazquez Returns to Yankees on Minor League Contract
Velazquez Plays Shortstop and Second Base
Bronx, New York native Andrew Velazquez has signed a minor league deal with the New York Yankees with an invite to spring training. Jack Curry of the YES Network was the first to report the signing.
Velazquez played 28 games with the Yankees in 2021 and was their starting shortstop in the American League Wild Card game against the Boston Red Sox, which the Yankees lost 6-2 at Fenway Park.
Velazquez made his last MLB appearance in 2023 with the Los Angeles Angels and batted .173 with two home runs and three RBI in 54 games. The 30-year-old switch hitter is playing for the Leones de Ponce of the LBPRC (Puerto Rican Winter League) this winter in preparation for spring training.
With Anthony Volpe locked in as the Yankees’ starting shortstop, Velazquez will likely see most of his playing time at second base during the spring.
